English 7

Seventh grade English is a time of growth.  Students take the skills they have learned in the English and Reading classrooms for the past several years and develop them to become more mature readers and writers.  Each student is responsible for selecting three  novels each nine weeks to read on their own.  They will receive grades for this work via the AR system that they are familiar with from earlier years.  While they are not required to obtain a certain number of points, they are encouraged to read novels that are on a comfortable, but somewhat challenging, level for them.

Weekly reading journals are also a big part of our curriculum  These are products of the student's reading through the week.  We will spend a great deal of time in class learning HOW to do reading journals while practicing other literacy skills.  There is a purpose behind the journals:  to help students become active readers and grow in their comprehension skills.  Students will have a sample reading journal in their binder.

Growing as writers is a goal for all students this year (and every year).  We will utilize My Access, a web based writing tool to assist with lots of writing practice.  The beauty of My Access is the instant feedback.  It is not a perfect system, and we recognize that.  What is, right?  But it is a great tool  Once students start using it, parents are encouraged to try it out as well.

As always, parents are welcome to contact the 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Porter.  Her email is lporter@countyineindians.org.
