English 11

Junior English is the class I have taught for the shortest time, but it has become one of my favorite courses to teach.  The unique thing about Eleventh Grade English is that it is a study of American Literature.  So we study the literature in order from the beginnings of the United States.  This gives us a timeline to connect to our literature.  We study the events that were taking place at the time in our country to help us understand the purpose the author had as well as the values and themes of the time period.  In essence, we study American History as it was written.

Students will select two novels each nine weeks to read on their own.  This comprises the bulk of our "homework". Students are asked to read and prepare for a weekly reading journal.  Some students may be able to do the needed work in a couple of sessions per week.  Others may need to devote more time in order to do the amount of reading necessary.  Students are encouraged to monitor their own reading habits and commit the time needed each week.  Two novel projects will be required each nine weeks as well.

We will do quite a bit of writing as well.  Much of it will be done utilizing the My Access tool.  This site is accessible through the Educational Web Page link to the left.  Students are reminded that I, not the web based program, will determine their final grade.  My Access will grade the grammar, spelling, etc., and it will give them suggestions for improving content, but I will check works to be sure they are truly answering the prompt as well as that they are the student's original work.
