English 9

Instruction in the English 9 classroom is built around a study of literary elements.  Plot, setting, characterization, point of view, voice, and tone are all important parts of pieces of literature and understanding these parts help us develop comprehension.  Will read both fiction and non-fiction pieces this year and work on identifying these parts as we do.

Students are required to read two self-selected novels each nine week.  They will complete weekly reading journals (much like those in 7th and 8th grade, but with added requirements to reflect the age and abilities of older students) to reflect on weekly reading.  They will also be assigned one novel project and one book talk each nine weeks.  Rubrics for each assignment will be given as the assignments are made.

We will continue to use the My Access tool for writing practice.
